Selection Debates
for World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) in Dundee, Scotland 2011
On 29th July 2010, 14 debaters
from the southwest of Germany met at the Königin-Olga-Stift in Stuttgart
to participate in the selection rounds for next year's WSDC in Dundee,
Scotland.
We congratulate those who've been through one round of debates and one
round of interviews that included nasty common-knowledge questions and
other psychological torment. These five debaters from four different schools
in two different cities excelled in both:
Felix Jiang, Landesgymn. f. Hochbegabte, Schwäb. Gmünd;
Kai Ohmstedt, Gymnasium in der Taus, Backnang;
Dilek Sevinc, Max-Born-Gymnasium, Backnang;
Karoline Schlotthauer, Max-Born-Gymnasium, Backnang;
Viola Schramm, Parler-Gymnasium, Schwäb. Gmünd.
We also congratulate those who were among the best eight speakers of the
debate rounds:
Maral Faghfouri, Elly-Heuss-Knapp-Gymnasium, Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt;
Inka Mössinger, Lessing-Gymnasium, Winnenden;
Isabel Sum, Königin-Olga-Stift, Stuttgart.
All contestants who weren't selected for the WSDC team are invited to
attend the Ljutomer Debating Weekend in Ljutomer, Slovenia from 3rd-8th
NOV 2010.
Good luck to all!!

Debating
techniques, especially debating in English, are still rather uncommon at
German schools. We look back to a tradition of 15 years, and we now send
an annual team to the World
Schools Debating Championships.
We passionately believe
that debating not only promotes independence of mind, a critical and analytical
approach, clarity in presentation, and a fearlessness in tackling controversial
matters, but also tolerance based on respect for contrary opinions. Debaters
think on their feet and they learn to use English as a second language.
