German
Schools Debating Championships
2010- 10th German
Schools Debating Championship 2010
from 13th - 16th May
GSDC 2010 welcomed 24 teams from 4 different states of
Germany and took place between 13th and 16th May 2010. This was the first
major competition since the change in the leadership of DSG in December
and so all eyes were on the organisers! Supported by a team of helpers
and excellent hosts (Hölderlin, Taus and Max-Born - thanks to
all of them!), we had possibly the best Germans ever! Everything went
according to plan and we had lively and thrilling debates. Three teams
won all their preliminary rounds (Hölderlin, Max-Born and Parler)
and were joined by LGH for the semi-finals, held on Saturday afternoon.
Hölderlin beat LGH 3-2 and Max-Born beat Parler 5-0 to qualify for
the final to be held at the Kursaal in Stuttgart on the Sunday.
This event was well attended (thanks to Martin Sauer for providing preparation
space) and saw a debate on donations to political parties. About 18 of
the 24 teams participating were there to watch an exciting debate, with
Max-Born beating Hölderlin 6-1 to claim the title of German Champion
for the third time (2006, 2008, 2010). They were able to take the
new trophy home with them, bearing the names of all the winners of GSDC
since 2002.
Once again, thanks to all of those who hosted, to the helpers (Carmen
Belafi, Christopher Sanchez, Jana Gilke, Jan Ohmstedt, Franz Rumiz from
Hölderlin and Antonia Pavlekovic and Hannah Piesch from Max-Born),
to all the judges and coaches and, of course, to the debaters who made
this tournament an occasion to remember!
David Whitehead
Chairman, DSG
Dear friends and colleagues,
It's my pleasure to open registration for the 10th German Schools Debating
Championships! Just to remind you, they will take place between the 13th
and 16th May 2010. So, let's run through the basics:
Where?
Thursday will be at Hölderlin-Gymnasium, Stuttgart.
Friday is still open - any offers?
Saturday will be at Max-Born-Gymnasium, Backnang
Sunday (the final) will be in the Kursaal, Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt
How many rounds?
This depends on how many teams register. The plan right now is 7 preliminaries,
a semi-final and the final. HOWEVER, if more than 25 teams register, we'll
change that to 6 prelims, a quarter-final, a semi and the final. As, each
year, there is always a huge rush to prepare the final (as no-one prepares),
this is going to be an impromptu final with 2 hours preparation. This
means that teams get to *enjoy* the Saturday evening rather than sitting
discussing cases, being surrounded by paper and worrying about contradictions
and arguments.
Are team members limited in number?
Yes. Because we have received signs of interest from outside Baden-Württemberg
and these teams cannot bring the entire school, we have decided to instigate
the same systems as have been used in Junior League and the recent Senior
League in Würzburg. Teams will be limited to 7 *NAMED* members. This
ensures that each team member will receive a certificate of participation
and we will not have the huge injustice of some teams bringing just five
members to Stuttgart and some having 12 or 13 members. Teams should registered
with the team name (usually school name!) and the names of the 7 speakers
as theyare to appear on the certificates - to me at whitehead@schoolsdebate.de
How much is participation?
30 Euros per school.
When do we need to register by?
15th April is the *absolute* deadline. We will have the motions by the
16th and the draw will be done that weekend. If a team drops out after
that, we will still reserve the right to request the participation fee.
No additional teams will be permitted after that date, no matter what
the reason. This is simply a consideration to those hosting the event
who will need to organise catering.
We're coming from elsewhere - where will we be staying?
Good question. If you want to stay in the Youth Hostel, then you're welcome
to do so. Ideally though we'd like to offer home stay agreements (for
coaches too) through which the teams from elsewhere in Germany have the
opportunity to stay with and get to know the Stuttgart region teams. We
see each other so fleetingly during the year, this would be a nice arrangement
to at least get teams meeting socially for at least a few evenings. Whichever
you decide, please contact Carmen Belafi (carmen.belafi@web.de) and let
her know and she will organise your accommodation. We would be very grateful
if you ensured that ALL accommodation is arranged by us, in order to keep
things well organised. Thanks!
OK, that's about it for now. Looking forward to hearing from you with
your registration and also if you can host the Friday, let me know as
well!
Best wishes,
David
2009- 9th German
Schools Debating Championship 2009
from 11th - 14th June
All schools with active English-language debating societies
are again encouraged to send their teams. We want not merely to find the
best team in Germany, but to give everybody both beginners and
more experienced debaters the chance to get to know the others,
to debate together and simply enjoy themselves. Your team should consist
of five debaters and one coach, who will function as one of the judges.
Every team must be prepared to debate either side of any of the motions
determined upon. We are very proud to welcome you all here in Baden-Württemberg
and looking forward to seeing you!
Yours Angelika
