1st MAY 2014

Dear global debating community!

Debating Society Germany e.V. invites all countries, institutions and schools to attend the 2014 version of EurOpen! This WSDC-format championship features eight prelims and final rounds beginning with octofinals.

The event will take place in Stuttgart, Germany from THU, 6th - WED, 12th November 2014.

We have introduced a new two-step registration procedure. Please read the details here.

The registration fees can be found here.

We have three confirmed Chief Adjudicators, whom we'd like to thank for their time and commitment:
Beth James (Wales), Branislav Fecko (Slovakia) and Roel Becker (Netherlands)

Team registration for Stage 1 (Registration application) is now open.

Looking forward to seeing you in Stuzttgart!
Debating Society Germany e.V.

We congratulate DSG Team Germany for its excellent performance at this year's World Schools Debating Championships in Panama City, Panama (22 JUL - 01 AUG 2025)! Out of 57 teams attending, Germany was just two ballots away from breaking into the top tier of 24 teams after the preliminary rounds and ended up on rank 31! This is on the one hand an outstanding achievement, considering the small size of the German schools debate circuit, on the other hand frustrating, that the break into the final rounds was missed by just a whim.

Either way, we would like to appreciate the tremendous efforts invested by all involved:

The debaters: Yuye Qian (Stuttgart), Kiara Schembs (Frankfurt), Zarant Horváth (Neuss), Alexandra Rubinstein (Schwäbisch Gmünd), Felix Polianski (Ulm)

Coach: Samuel Scheuer

Not in image: Coach and Judge Gaby Lin

Not in image: Independent judge from Germany: Tarun Ruschmeier

Important side note: Tarun Ruschmeier was the fourth DSG member to judge a WSDC Grand FinalCongratulations!!! He succeeded Christopher Sanchez (2012), Jana Gilke (2017) and Louisa Broeg (2019).

The tournament was won by Team India on a 7-0 unanimous decision. Congratulations!!

Teams faced:

Rd1 Chile (win)
Rd2 Indonesia (loss)
Rd3 Mexico (loss)
Rd4 Denmark (loss)
Rd5 Turkey (win)
Rd6 Slovakia (win)
Rd7 Estonia (win)
Rd8 Australia (loss)

Platform: Zoom
Selections will consist of: a written case, three impromptu debates, and an interview.

Who can apply:
Applications for the national team are open to all debaters who attend a school in Germany and will be 14 years or older in July 2025. Younger students may be only eligible for the development squad.

What is the timeline for the selections:
- Applications close on October 1st
- The motion for the written case will be sent to you on October 1st, and you have until 8 pm CEST on October 6th to hand it in
- On October 9th, we will send out the invitations for the interview. Notice that this step is new
- All other tasks (impromptu debates, interview) will be completed during the selections weekend.
A detailed schedule and additional information will be sent to applicants via e-mail.

What you should expect:
The selections process will consist of three impromptu debates, a 15 minute interview, and the submission of a written case (argument ideas for a motion).

To make the application process as accessible as possible, selections for the national team will be held online this year using the video conference app Zoom.

We will be selecting debaters for both the National Team and the Development Team. The National Team will attend the World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) in July 2025. They are set to be held in Panama City, Panama.

A large part of the training sessions and tournaments that both the national team and the development squad attend will be held online, although we will attend in-person tournaments wherever possible. Please bear in mind that these might clash with school commitments. However, we will try to limit the impact on schooling as much as possible.
